The ink now dry on the deed, East West Partners and Aspen Skiing Company are well down the line with their plans for the completion of the next phase of Base Village in Snowmass. John Calhoun, director of sales and marketing for East West, met with our office recently and assured us that the day after the ski season ends on April 17, we’ll definitely see at least a “dude with a shovel” out on the gondola plaza, soon to be followed by a huge construction crew getting started on four different projects. By summer, big cranes will be visible from throughout the Village; and, by fall, we’ll see all the buildings going vertical. It’s been four years since bulldozer operator Jesse Steele inadvertently scooped up a mammoth bone in a drained reservoir in Snowmass Village, leading to the discovery of one of the richest and most significant ice age sites in North America.
So what’s a community to do with this incredible find? Four years, two committees, two studies, one exhibit center, and hundreds of thousands of dollars later, the nonprofit organization that was created to take charge of Snowmass Discovery has a plan. A $10 million plan.
