Snow! In Photos

After weeks of sunny, warm weather — which some would call gorgeous, but not for that long in this ski town — a powerful winter storm brought back that familiar giddy winter vibe that had been lacking since the beginning of the year. The slopes of Aspen/Snowmass reaped a foot and a half of snow over three days, with more in the forecast as the weather pattern, according to more than one expert, has shifted to favor Colorado with plenty of the white stuff for the end of February and beginning of March. (And, according to Aspen Weather meteorologist Cory Gates, some of the most severe winters are coming down the pike in the next several years.)

As hungry powder hounds hit the slopes, others took time to marvel at and document the beauty of the snow-covered landscape. So rather than talk about the snow any further, we’ll let these images tell the story. Enjoy. Continue reading

As Base Village Review Continues, Some Things to Consider

Review of a long-awaited plan for the completion of Snowmass Base Village began in early February, and is expected to continue into the fall. The review will encompass every aspect and remote detail of Related Colorado’s application to amend the 2004 approvals, including square footage, planned uses for future buildings, parking, community benefits, and more.

But what’s probably top of mind for many are the project’s potential economic benefits. The uncompleted base and uncertainty over its future has been a negative factor in Snowmass Village’s recovery from the recession. And now that it’s been ten years since the initial approvals for Base Village, one of the key questions is, what needs to change in the plans for the remaining development to ensure that it’s viable?
